Indigome was created to showcase the magic and mysteries of natural textile creation in Vietnam. Ethnic groups such as the H’Mong and the Dao have practiced the heritage arts of indigo dyeing, batik designing and hemp weaving for centuries, passing their trades down from generation to generation, daughter to daughter.
Surrounded by the beauty of green highlands and terraced fields, threads of hemp are intertwined to create a fabric that is strong, yet soft. The textile creators press beeswax batik motifs onto the cloth and dip it into basins of colorful dye made from fermented plants and roots. Their hands used to dye the textiles take on the colors of the sky and the earth, from turquoise to terracotta, to the deepest blue. They become a part of their art, a living emblem of their heritage.
